We have upgraded the wax used in Black Diamond lube to the same high fluor Rex N-kinetic™ nanowax which is used in our best cross-country ski waxes. We took the recipe for black diamond and made it even better for electric bikes in two ways: Nanotungsten (WS2) improves the pressure resistance of the lubricant and further reduces the level of friction. When used in combination with our proprietary Black Diamond nanoparticle technology, a synergistic effect is achieved. The use of both additives at their optimal concentration gives a result that is better than the sum of its parts. For best performance, both nano additives are blended into the lubricant in an ultrasonic process at our factory in Hartola, Finland. As an additional spice, we added Rex N-Kinetic™ hydrophobic polymers to the composition. They give Black Diamond E better anticorrosion properties than our previous chain lubes, and improve performance in very cold conditions.

Hot waxing is an increasingly popular method for lubricating bicycle chains. The solid wax does not collect dirt, keeping the entire transmission of the bike clean and repelling dirt more effectively than traditional chain lubes. Black Diamond Hot Wax combines Black Diamond’s proven effective additive technology with over 70 years of wax experience from Rex. By switching to hot waxing, bike cleaning becomes much easier, and drive train component wear is dramatically decreased in long-term use. Hot-waxed chains don’t stain and do not require powerful solvents for cleaning. Instead, they can be easily cleaned with hot water only.
High-end two-step waxing option in a single package of wax
We transformed the already thoroughly tested and effective Black Diamond additive technology into a solid Rex wax base. To ensure high manufacturing quality, we put all the Black Diamond additives into one black piece, which is hand-cast in our product development laboratory in Hartola. The black additive piece can be thought of as a bottle of Black Diamond chain lube in solid form! The eleven white Rex paraffin blocks, carefully selected for their wax mixture, are combined with the additive block to guarantee the best lubrication performance on the market. By melting all the pieces (11+1 blend) together, you get a wax mixture that works perfectly in all conditions.
For an extremely durable mixture for even the longest rides and races, melt the black additive piece with four pieces of base wax (4+1 blend). The remaining seven blocks of wax can be used as a cleaning pre-treatment wax to keep the 4+1 blend clean and maintain its high performance for longer. With the two-stage wax treatment option in one package, you get everything you need for optimal chain lubrication.

Rex has been asked many times about hot wax for chains, and we knew that we, if anyone, had to make this product. In electric bikes, chains and chainrings are subjected to higher forces than usual. Small chainrings and sprocket sizes, low cadence, and high power are a combination that wears out the drivetrain quickly. By choosing the right chain lubricant, the lifespan of your chains can be increased up to six times when compared to average lubes on the market.
Under load, the Black Diamond E’s nanoparticles form an extremely durable and low-friction surface layer on metal-to-metal contact surfaces, significantly improving the lubricating properties. In addition to low friction and low wear, Rex chain lubes’ ability to recover from temporary interruptions in lubrication caused by sand, water and dust is researched to be the best in its category. Even when subjected to contamination, Rex does not turn into an abrasive paste that quickly wears out chains. This is due to Rex’s extensive knowledge of dirt-repellent waxes and their additives.

Synergetic advancements with nanotungsten
We took the recipe for black diamond and made it even better for electric bikes in two ways: Nanotungsten (WS2) improves the pressure resistance of the lubricant and further reduces the level of friction. When used in combination with our proprietary Black Diamond nanoparticle technology, a synergistic effect is achieved. The use of both additives at their optimal concentration gives a result that is better than the sum of its parts. For best performance, both nano additives are blended into the lubricant in an ultrasonic process at our factory in Hartola, Finland. As an additional spice, we added Rex N-Kinetic™ hydrophobic polymers to the composition. They give Black Diamond E better anticorrosion properties than our previous chain lubes, and improve performance in very cold conditions.

Until now, optimizing your chain has required purchasing a pre-optimised expensive chain that becomes a normal chain when the optimization wears off. With Rex Race Day Spray, you can apply the optimization treatment yourself without even removing the chain from the bike. Instead of optimizing only the chain, you can also treat the cassette for improved shifting and dirt repellency in extreme conditions. And in addition, it is also economical: One can of Race Day Spray gives you three chain treatments for a lower price than one readily optimized chain!

In tests conducted by Wheel Energy testing laboratories, Race Day Spray gave impressive results:
Drivetrain noise and friction are lower from the beginning of application. (-1dB.) Drivetrain noise stayed -1dB lower during the 5h dyno test.
A Race Day Spray -treated chain that had been ridden for 7 hours in “spring classics” weather, (dusty and wet gravel and asphalt), gained only 0,5 watts friction when measured post-race and appeared completely clean!
Chains that are treated with competing optimization solutions like the UltraFast process, typically gain 2.07 W from pre-race to post-race even in shorter races. (As measured by Friction Facts in 2012 )
Compared to a chain that has lost its lubrication in a race, the advantage when using Rex Race Day Spray is three extra watts in the finish line sprint.

Lab tests verify impressive performance
Fully cleaned chains were tested right after applying the lube, and after a six-hour race simulation test with identical bikes and drivetrains. The test verifies what can also be heard and seen: A chain treated with Race Day Spray stays quiet, clean and efficient.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the treatment last?
The effect of Race Day Spray coating lasts for hundreds of kilometers. When the chain starts to sound dry, you can apply more Domestique Chain Lube. Before applying Race Day Spray again, clean the chain completely.
Can i use race day spray together with an another chain lube than rex domestique?
The formula of Race Day Spray has been developed to work together with our Domestique Chain Lube, and their ingredients are designed to complement each other. We do not recommend using it with an another brand chain lube. Please not that Race Day Spray is a coating and not a lubricant itself, and requires the use of Rex Chain Lube.
Can i apply it on my mountain bike?
Rex Race Day Spray is designed to be used in all cycling disciplines. In MTB use, the dirt repellency capabilities of Race Day Spray keep the drivetrain cleaner in extreme race conditions, reduce drivetrain wear and ensure good shifting performance. Perfect for 24-hour races in muddy conditions.
Application
Degrease the chain and apply Rex Chain Lube generously (2-3 applications).
Spin the drivetrain slowly to make the lube penetrate, wipe off excess lube.
Spray onto chain from ~2 cm distance for a couple seconds while spinning the cranks backwards quickly. Repeat also on the inner surface of chain near the top derailleur pulley.
Let dry until chain appears white.
When raining, apply also onto cassette.
